CLARA BAKKER

À cœur vaillant rien d'impossible

I believe the most interesting problems emerge from the cracks between disciplines. Branching out, we can be more imaginative researchers and better listeners.
I am a Jr. Scientific Programmer in the Park Lab at Harvard Medical School and alumna of Columbia University in the City of New York, where I received a BA in Computer Science - Mathematics, with concentrations in Chemistry and Classics. And I'm other things. ↴

Clara Bakker: Welcome

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I have eight years' experience teaching and tutoring subjects from theoretical computer science to Ovid's Metamorphoses. During my past year as a computational chemistry researcher in the Cacciuto Group at Columbia, I investigated active matter via computer simulations. In particular, I explored light activated colloidal crystals and self-propelled filaments, but systems from robot swarms to flocks of birds can be studied as active matter.

MORE INFO

I am a computer scientist most experienced in C/C++ and with plenty of practice in Java and Python. I'm always learning new tools and languages with the help of my mentors, peers, and students.

I'm also lucky to be published! Publication (just the one, for now):
Das S.; Bowers M.L.; Bakker C.; Cacciuto A. “Active
sculpting of colloidal crystals” J. Chem. Phys. 150, 134505 (2019)

Wondering what I've taught? I started out as a volunteer Algebra II tutor in 2011, and gradually added geometry, calculus, chemistry, and English. I've been a teaching assistant at Columbia for computer science theory and elsewhere a TA for cryptology, advanced cryptology, data structures and algorithms, and robotics. In 2016 , I created and led a short course for high school students in Onagawa, Japan about Ovid's Metamorphoses.

I also worked for six years at two libraries (at home and at university). There is little work more rewarding than that which helps others, regardless of age, to learn and grow.
